AUGUSTA — Courtney Dunton hit an uncontested 12-foot jumper at the buzzer on Friday night to give No. 5 Hampden a 42-40 victory over No. 4 Nokomis in a Class A North girls’ basketball quarterfinal at Augusta Civic Center.
Olivia Brown sank two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining to tie it for Nokomis (13-6). The Warriors didn’t get back on defense quickly enough to deny the entry pass to 6-foot-3 freshman Bailey Donovan at half court, and Donovan found Dunton, a senior, alone and streaking toward the basket.
Hampden (11-8) will face No. 1 Lawrence in Wednesday’s semifinals.
Donovan led the Broncos with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Dunton added 11 points.
Brown scored 16 for Nokomis, which rallied from a 35-28 deficit in the fourth quarter. Chelsea Crockett hit a key 3-pointer during the rally.
Sidney Moore evened the game at 38 with a free throw at the 1:17 mark before the Broncos retrieved the lead on a drive by Marissa Gilpin.
Gilpin collected all eight of her points in the second half.
