AUBURN — City officials will guide business owners and their bookkeepers through the intricacies of state business personal tax filings at two forums next week.
City Assessor Karen Scammon said the city tries to host the sessions every few years.
“We know businesses turn over and different people end up filing personal property information for Auburn businesses,” Scammon said. “They may be new people who might not be familiar with what the law says or what assets need to included in the filings.”
The first session is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23. The second is at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25.
Both sessions will be in the Community Room on the second floor of Auburn Hall.
“We like to hit the new business owners, as well as their accountants and controllers to let them know what to expect,” Scammon said. “We’re aiming for all businesses, small and large. Some of the larger, more established businesses can use a little bit of guidance as well.”
The first filings with the city are due to Auburn Assessing Department by April 15, she said.
Business personal properties are anything a business needs to operate that is not being sold — machinery, office equipment and furniture, computers and tools. Maine has different taxing requirements for different property and various businesses.
The sessions will focus on the Property Schedule Form 706, the Business Equipment Tax Exemption, and the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement programs. Auburn assessing staffers and representatives from Maine Revenue Services will provide information and answer questions.
