Seniors plan Valentine dinner

AUBURN — The First Auburn Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, for a Valentine Day dinner and bingo.

Tickets will be on sale for the Wednesday, March 16, boiled dinner. They are $5 each.

There were 38 members present for the last meeting.

Attendance winners were Belinda Gerry and David LePage; pot of gold, Larry Castner, Lorna Fanjoy and Carol LePage; and 50-50 winners were Jeanne Adams and Mary Ray.

Cabin Fever supper at church

POLAND — A Cabin Fever supper will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Poland Community Church, 1212 Main St., across from the library. Cost is $7.

Proceeds will benefit Lifesprings Inc., a nonprofit program promoting healthy lifestyles and safe affordable housing for seniors.

Neighborhood group to hold fundraiser

FARMINGTON — The Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association Inc. will host a Chinese auction Sunday, Feb. 21, with bidding to start at noon, at the Fairbanks School, 508 Fairbanks Road, Route 4.

Drawing of tickets will take place at 1 p.m. Tickets are five for $1; buy 25, get five free.

There will be door prizes, and refreshments will be served.

Eddy School to host open house

NEWRY — The Eddy School, 8 Bear River Road, will hold an open house to commemorate National School Choice Week 2016 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22.

During the morning, attendees will see the students in action.

Historical society plans potluck

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Historical Society will meet Monday, Feb. 22, for a 6 p.m. potluck supper at North Church, corner of High and Court streets. Guests are welcome.

During the program, Richard Marble, member of Maine Metal Detecting Group, will reveal how he discovered the earliest Farmington Gore School.

The society will introduce a new program featuring a monthly reading from a journal or diary. This month’s reading will be from Vester Coffin Warren’s journal. Members are encouraged to contribute ancestors’ writings at future meetings.

Grants available for Franklin nonprofits

ELLSWORTH-PORTLAND — Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that draw on the strengths of the community and foster collaboration are encouraged to apply to Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program.

A volunteer committee of Franklin and Somerset county residents and business leaders reviews grants and makes recommendations for funding. The deadline for applying is Monday, Feb. 15. Application and guidelines are available online.

In 2015, the committee awarded more than $83,000 in grants to 15 nonprofits. They included $10,000 to Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services for a rural educator and advocate position in Franklin County.

With offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people.

Public poetry contest seeking submissions

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Public Library and the Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties, along with the Beloit Poetry Journal, are hosting a poetry contest.

The public is invited to submit now. The deadline for submissions is midnight, March 8. Each entrant is allowed to submit up to three poems, with each poem less than 60 lines.

There are three age categories: 16 years and younger, 17 to 25 years of age, 26 years and older.

Poems may be submitted to the Farmington Public Library. Entrants should include full name, contact information and age category on the back of each poem.

Winners will be announced on March 31.

There are three prizes for each category: first prize is $50, second prize is $25 and third prize is a $20 gift certificate to the Literacy Volunteers book sale.

The public is welcome to a public reading of the winning poems at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at at the Farmington Public Library.

Ecumenical Food Pantry open on Tuesdays

RANGELEY — The Ecumenical Food Pantry is open from 10 a.m. to noon each Tuesday in the undercroft at the Church of the Good Shepherd (the Episcopal Church) on Main Street. All are welcome.

Finnish language class at Society

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will offer a Finnish language class this spring.

Marja-Leena Bailey will conduct a four-session program, scheduled for Saturdays, Apirl 2, 9 and 30 and May 7 at the FinnAm Hall at 8 Maple St. Class time schedule will be announced once the Society has an idea of the number of folks attending and their Finnish language experience.

Cost is $75 and $40 for additional family members. Checks should be payable to Finnish American Heritage Society and sent to P.O. Box 294, West Paris, ME 04289. An email address and/or phone number should be submitted with payment.
