NEW GLOUCESTER — It took more than an hour for a dozen firefighters and rescuers to free a person from a heavily damaged car that crashed on Lewiston Road on Wednesday night, Fire Department Capt. Scott Doyle said in a news release.

The person was flown to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, he said in the release. The person’s identity was not immediately available.

Maine State Police Trooper Nathan Jamo was leading the investigation into the single-vehicle crash that occurred at 7:51 p.m. at 1156 Lewiston Road, which is Routes 100 and 202.

“The Fire and EMS crews found the extrication very challenging due to the extent of the damage to the vehicle and injuries to the patient and positioning,” Doyle said. “Patient extrications require a true, methodical process in order to accomplish a safe and successful removal of a patient. Every action has a reaction when cutting vehicles,” he said.

The highway was closed for an hour.
