PARIS — The Maine Veterans’ Home has chosen Robert B. Houle as Veteran of the Month.
Houle was born on April 4, 1942, in Lewiston and grew up in Lewiston and Lisbon. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December 1963 and served for 20 years, retiring in December 1983.
Houle served during Vietnam and achieved the rank of master sergeant. Places of service include Hawaii, California, Arkansas, CCK Tiwan and Portland.
He took training courses throughout his years in the service and was a tactical aircraft maintenance technician for eight years and eight months and was also a recruiter for 10 years and 10 months.
When Houle served in Portland, he was an Air Force tester at area high schools.
Houle graduated from the NCO Academy and from recruiting school and graduated as an Air Force recruiter, being named Top Recruiter three years in a row.
Houle earned many medals and ribbons, the AFR Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Device, Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters.
Houle married his wife, Lorraine, in 1965 and they have one son.
After his discharge, he worked at Sears installing cabinets, worked as an appliance repairman and electrician and in woodworking. He built three houses and was always helping someone.
Houle enjoyed snowmobiling, reading, dancing and family gatherings and was a member of the Helping Hand Fellowship in Lisbon. He was also an active member in the American Legion. He enjoys the Red Sox.
Houle came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in July 2014 and resides on the B unit.
