LEEDS — The Leeds Historical Society and Marilyn Burgess will present a Civil War program, “They Went Off to War: The Stories of Leeds Soldiers in the Civil War.”
It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Leeds Community Church, 123 Church Hill Road. The storm date will be on Sunday, March 13.
Ever since Burgess and her granddaughter visited Gettysburg more than 15 years ago, Burgess has been researching the lives and service of Leeds Civil War soldiers.
“Gettysburg is a hallowed place,” said Burgess, and when she returned to Leeds from Pennsylvania, she was moved to discover as much as she could about the men who left their small Maine town to fight in what remains the deadliest war fought on American soil.
In this second in her series of Civil War programs, Burgess will focus on the Civil War service of a number of Leeds native sons.
The program is free and open to the public. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions, and they are encouraged to bring information they may have about the Leeds Civil War involvement to share with the group.
Ernie Sylvester and the Slab City band will once again provide period music for the presentation.
