1930 – 2016

LEWISTON — Shirley M. Hawkins, 85, of Minot went to be with her husband, Kenneth, on Thursday, March 3. Known as “Nana” to all who loved her, Shirley was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.

She was born in Adams, Mass., on March 15, 1930, the daughter of John and Mabel (Johnson) Peterson. Shirley grew up in Cumberland and went to high school in Lewiston.

She married Kenneth Hawkins on Dec. 31, 1949. She and her husband were longtime residents of Minot, having moved there in 1966. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2000.

Shirley worked in Auburn shoe shops in her early life and later became a homemaker. She was a member of First Auburn Senior Citizens, Robin Dow and Park Avenue Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing cards and games with her dear friends and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sharon Black and husband, David, of Idaho, Faye Graham and husband, Robert, of Minot; grandchildren, Julie St. Hilaire and husband, Bryan, of Minot, David Black and wife, Stephanie, of Idaho; great-grandchildren, Hannah St. Hilaire and David Kenneth Black; and a special nephew who was like a son, Gary Peterson and wife, Kathi, and their family.
