1929 – 2016

NEW GLOUCESTER — Shirley Haskell Donovan, 86, of New Gloucester passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8.

Shirley was born in West Baldwin, the oldest of five children born to Emma and Shailer Haskell. She graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1948. On Dec. 4, 1949, she married Leonard Donovan and raised their family of seven children.

Shirley was a social butterfly, who loved people and dogs. She was an active member in the Grange, the Degree of Pocahontas and the New Gloucester Historical Society, and she was a big Red Sox fan.

For many years, she baked the biscuits for the Harraseeket Grange baked bean suppers in Freeport. Her door was always open for those who needed help. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and friend to all.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Natalie; and loving husband of 44 years, Leonard.

Surviving are her brother, Terrance; sons, Gary, Linwood, Randell and Robert; and daughters, Donna, Karen and Diane. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A special thanks to the staff at Clover Health Care in Auburn and the Androscoggin Hospice for all their care. The family is forever grateful.

Something that was always said when Leonard would come home from work is now being said one last time as Shirley goes to be with him:

“I’m home, you lucky woman.”

“I’m here, you lucky man.”
