A pipelining company is scheduled to begin work under the Androscoggin River later this month. William R. Adams Jr., director of the Lewiston Public Works Department, said Friday that Pipe Linings Inc. is slated to resume work on the Lewiston project around March 17 and the river job is to be tackled first. The firm was hired to reline and clean sections of municipal water pipe and discontinued work late last year because of the weather. There are two 24-inch water lines which cross the river and these will be cleaned and relined, the director said. Crews will start on each end and work toward the center. The two lines are under the river in the area of the falls. Ledge was blasted to make channel for the pipe. The water will be shut off for the operation. This project is part of the city’s long-range water improvement program.

A hole on Hampshire Street, Auburn, that opened when a 75-year-old sewer main collapsed Thursday afternoon grew over the weekend. Sewerage District Superintendent Norm Lamie said the repair is proving more difficult than expected. “We can’t find a solid piece of pipe to latch onto,” Lamie said Sunday evening. “It’s such an old pipe.” The 24-inch main is made of a mixture of sand and unreinforced concrete, he said. “We may end up replacing 100 feet instead of the original 20 feet.” Sewerage District employees, alerted by a motorist, were at the Hampshire Street site, between Goss and Willow streets, when a chunk of the roadway fell in. As of Thursday afternoon, the opening was 30 feet long, 20 feet wide and 18 feet deep. The length of the hole grew to 50 feet over the weekend, Lamie said.
