There were few correct entries for last week’s mystery photo. Those people who guessed correctly knew a lot about the former Maine Central Railroad speeder that is on display outside the Great Falls Model Railroad Club on Mill Street in New Auburn. The speeder was also known as a railway motor car, putt-putt, track-maintenance car, crew car, jigger, trike, quad, trolley or inspection car and also known as a draisine. The motorized vehicle was formerly used on railroads around the world by track inspectors and work crews to move quickly to and from work sites. It was called a speeder because it is faster than a human-powered vehicle, such as a handcar. Motorized inspection cars date back to at least 1896. In a random drawing of correct entries, Bob Cavanagh of Auburn was chosen as the winner. Cavanagh is not a member of the club, but he is a train buff. He is involved in many railroad restoration projects and volunteers at the Cumberland Fair, where he mans a hand car for anyone to try. He is the winner of a $10 Subway gift card.
