SCARBOROUGH — The Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team became state champions at the State Academic Decathlon Championship at Scarborough High School on Feb. 27.

The team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, will travel in April to the National Championship in Anchorage, Alaska.

Academic Decathlon is comprised of A, B and C students who study together as a team for a year and then compete in 10 different categories: art, economics, essay, interview, language/ literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech. Each year there is a different theme. This year’s theme was India; next year’s is World War II.

The following students participated for Monmouth and won the following medals:

Alternate team members: Maddie Amero, gold medal in essay, silver medals in music and social science; and Luke Thombs, gold medal in math, silver medals in essay, art and economics.

Competition team members: Liliana Stewart, first place super-quiz, bronze medal in essay; Samantha Grandahl, first place super-quiz, gold medal in speech; Madison Bumann, first place super-quiz, silver medal in interview, bronze medal in essay; Emmeline Willey, first place super-quiz, gold medal in speech, bronze medal in music; Dylan Gof, first place super-quiz, silver medals in interview and economics; Chris Dumont, first place super-quiz, gold medal in essay, silver medals in interview and language/literature, bronze medal in social science, second-highest scorer in the state of Maine Varsity Division; Gerard Boulet, first place super-quiz, gold medal in language/literature, silver medals in art, music and speech, bronze medal in essay, third-highest scorer in the state of Maine Varsity Division; Corey Tatarka, first place super-quiz, gold medals in art, speech and music, silver medals in essay and social science, bronze medal in math, first-highest scorer in the state of Maine Varsity Division; and Rebekah Bryant, first place super-quiz, gold medals in science, interview and language/literature, silver medals in art, essay and music, bronze medals in social science, math and economics, first-highest team scorer and first-highest scorer in the state of Maine Scholastic Division.
