AVON — Voters will meet Saturday to elect seven officers and set a budget for the year.
The annual town meeting starts at 9 a.m. at the Town Hall. Nominations for a selectman, school board director, town clerk, constable, tax collector, treasurer and road commissioner will be taken from the floor.
Last year’s costs to run the town were approximately $211,000, according to First Selectman Greta Espeaignnette. Road maintenance continues to be a large portion of the budget.
Voters will be asked to appropriate $35,000 from excise taxes for summer roadwork. A culvert on the Avon Valley Road needs to be replaced, Espeaignnette said, and although selectmen are applying for a bond, voters must raise and appropriate funds to start the project. They also will be asked to approve $35,000 from excise taxes for winter roadwork.
Voters will be asked to spend $2,200 for services of the Phillips Public Library; and $27,000 for fire protection services to Phillips and $8,000 to Strong.
Nearly 58 percent of taxpayers’ dollars, or $412,003, supported Regional School Unit 58 last year, according to Espeaignnette. The school budget for 2016-17 is being developed.
