DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an abundance of costume, 10k and 14k gold jewelry that I would like to sell on consignment. Do you know of any places that do that? Thanks. — No Name, Auburn.

ANSWER: A few of the clothing consignment shops around, like Juliet’s Clothing and Accessories at 120 Center St. in Auburn, do sell jewelry on consignment. However, another option you may want to look into is local jewelry stores who purchase estate jewelry outright from people such as yourself. That means you walk out of the store with cash in hand instead of having to wait for the right customer to come along and purchase your pieces one at a time. A few of the stores who purchase estate jewelry in the Lewiston-Auburn area include Day’s Jewelers, located in the Auburndale Shopping Center on Center Street; Goldworks, located at 33 Center St. in Auburn; and Republic Jewelry and Collectibles, located at 212 Center St. in Auburn.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In advance of a training session scheduled for May, people from the greater Lewiston-Auburn community who have experience with cancer are invited to apply to become a volunteer with the Maine Buddy Program. Anyone who is a cancer survivor or has been a caregiver to someone with cancer is encouraged to apply. The volunteer training will be held over two evenings — Wednesday, May 4, and Thursday, May 5 — at the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston.

The Maine Buddy Program is a statewide peer support program that pairs trained volunteers with individuals who are dealing with cancer in their lives — either through their own illness or the cancer diagnosis of a family member. Buddies provide emotional support, hope and encouragement to help individuals move through their own or a loved one’s cancer journey. Erin Witham, program and volunteer manager at the Cancer Community Center in South Portland, provides training, supervision and support for volunteers in the program.

Witham stresses that the program especially needs people who served as caregivers of a loved one who was diagnosed with cancer. “If you have supported someone through cancer treatment and feel you could provide support to another person doing the same, we encourage you to become a volunteer with the Maine Buddy Program.”

Anyone interested in applying can contact Erin Witham at the Cancer Community Center, either by phone at (207) 774-2200 or by email at ewitham@cancercommunitycenter.org.

Volunteer applications are available online at: CancerCommunityCenter.org. Applications should be sent by April 25 in order to be considered for the May training.

The Cancer Community Center supports Mainers facing cancer by providing programs and services such as support groups, complementary therapies, wellness and creative expression programs, educational presentations and social opportunities. All programs are offered at no charge, through the generosity of the community.
