Cycling for healthy air for more than 31 years, the Trek Across Maine attracts nearly 2,000 cyclists and 750 volunteers. This three-day trek takes cyclists 180 miles from Sunday River to the sea in Belfast. The Trek Across Maine is the largest fundraiser of its kind for the American Lung Association nationwide.

Join us for the Trek Across Maine as a volunteer on Father’s Day weekend from June 17- 19 to continue the history of outstanding volunteer engagement.

Trek volunteers bring a wide array of talents, energy and fun to the annual events that support the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Volunteers can join together — encourage your family, friends, civic group or workplace to share the excitement. Whether you support our cyclists as a group or as a single volunteer, your help is vital to our success. DEAR SUN SPOTS: We live in New Hampshire, but will be staying in your area for the summer at a lake camp. Our teenage son and daughter are looking for a summer job. We think it’s important for young people to learn about hard work and financial responsibility, but we’re finding that more and more places are unwilling to give young workers a chance. Both are hard workers and eager to be earning their first paychecks. Can you tell us who hires teenagers in your area? Especially one who will need a work permit? We were thinking that maybe a summer camp would hire them, but most we’ve checked post minimum ages for employment at 19 or even as high as 21. Thank you. — Dawn, Gilmanton Iron Works, NH.

ANSWER: You are right, many summer camps require older workers. This is likely due to the fact that so many camps actually cater to kids from age 7 or 8 to age 18. They may not want their counselors to be the same age as their campers. There are a few camps, like some of the local Y camps, that will hire “junior” counselors who are aged 16 to 18 years old. Another possibility is local day camp programs offered through some town recreation programs. Local farms are a great place to check as well. They may have a need for seasonal labor and be more likely to hire young, dependable workers. Also, check with local ice cream stands or summer restaurants.
