KENNEBUNKPORT (AP) — Democrat Susan Deschambault of Biddeford has won a special election to represent Maine Senate District 32 through the end of the year.

Deschambault earned about 57 percent of the vote to defeat her Republican opponent, Stephen Martin of Biddeford. The outcome doesn’t change the balance of power in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The District 32 seat was left empty when Sen. David Dutremble resigned earlier this year after announcing he was struggling with alcohol addiction and seeking recovery.

The winner will hold the seat until the end of the year. Voters return to the polls in November to elect a senator to serve a two-year term.
