GREENE — Crews from half a dozen towns went to Brule Road on Friday afternoon to battle flames that burned across a field and into a barn.

Firefighters from Lewiston, Greene, Sabattus, Wales, Turner, Leeds and Monmouth were sent to battle the blaze shortly after 2 p.m.

Brule Road runs off Lane Road.

There were no reports of injuries. Fire spread across the field and burned beneath a row of old cars as firefighters attempted to keep flames away from the barn at 49 Brule St.

Calls were put out for more manpower at the scene as crews sought to keep the flames from spreading farther. The effort was hampered at times due to a shortage of water, officials said.

According to town records, the property is owned by Jeffrey Brule.

Greene residents 2 miles away reported they could smell smoke from the fire.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation Friday night.
