1928 – 2016

AUBURN — Flora B. McGraw, 87, of Auburn died early Saturday morning, April 16, at Clover Manor with family at her side.

She was born in Augusta on Oct. 27, 1928, a daughter of William C. and Florence M. (Varney) Brann. She was educated in Augusta schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1945. Following high school, she attended Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Lewiston and graduated in 1949. On Nov. 6, 1949, she married Augustus K. McGraw and together they settled in Auburn on the Waterman Road to raise their family. He passed away Dec. 9, 1989.

Flora worked many years at CMG (now Central Maine Medical Center) as the assistant head nurse and became oncology certified while practicing oncology nursing on M1. She was a very compassionate, supportive and caring nurse. After her retirement from CMMC, she worked per diem in the CMMC and St. Mary’s doctors’ offices of oncology until her full retirement at age 74.

As a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Some of her favorite enjoyments were cooking and baking and she was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoyed sewing and knitting for family, she loved flowers and gardening, and she especially loved being with family on holidays and birthdays. She enjoyed traveling and took several trips with family including Florida and Pennsylvania in addition to bus trips. She was an unconditional-loving, devoted and hardworking wife, an amazing mother and grandmother, who will be dearly missed by family, and all those whom she encountered throughout all the days of her life.

Flora leaves behind her six children, Arlana Davis and husband, Merle, of Auburn, Bruce McGraw and wife, June, of Auburn, Gina Thompson and husband, David, of Sabattus, Susan Dagneau and husband, Paul, of Lewiston, Gail Clukey of Sabattus, and Betsy McFadden and husband, Blaine, of Greene; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Paradis of Waterville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Augustus McGraw; a son, Mark McGraw; a brother, Carroll F. Brann; and an infant sister, Shirley.
