1923 – 2016

NORWAY — Mary A. Springer, 92, died at the Norway Center for Health & Rehabilitation on Tuesday, April 26.

Mary was born May 6, 1923, in Hebron. She graduated from Paris High School in 1942. She was a member of the Paris Alumni and attended the University of Maine at Farmington.

She worked in local factories and also in Lewiston-Auburn. Her favorite job was teaching special education at the Little Red School House at Norway Lake. She was a member of the Mother’s Club and a Girl Scout leader back in the 1960s. Mary loved being a chaperone for her kids on trips to parades with The Comets.

In 1972, she married Harold Springer, a farmer from East Waterford, and they were married until 1981. She was a member of the local fair association. She then moved to Norway and was employed by Raymond Funeral Home, where she lived and answered the phone off-hours for several years.

Her last independent years were spent in South Paris and Norway, where she had many friends at Oxford Meadows Apartments. Her last six years were spent at the Norway Center for Health & Rehabilitation. She loved all of the staff and she enjoyed keeping them on their toes by running in the halls.

Mary always loved to dance and her nickname was “Jitterbug” when she was young. She was also a very good roller-skater. She loved her pugs and gardening. Mary always enjoyed traveling to Ellsworth, where she had many friends and family, and she took her children and grandchildren there often for visits while they were growing up. Mary loved quilting and knitting sweaters for her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren are now wearing them. Mary loved to eat and was a great cook, and she had a large collection of cookbooks.

She will be sadly missed by all. Mary is survived by daughters, Donna Card and “Bucky” Parsons of Conway, N.H., Annie Laurie and husband, Donald Miller, of Intervale, N.H., and Roberta “Babe” and husband, Daniel Dubois, of Oxford.

Grandchildren are Richard and wife, Bethany Deshon Card, of Oxford; Aldon and wife, Samantha Miller, of Scarborough, Kaylie Dubois of West Paris, and Korrie Dubois of Auburn. Lisa Card passed away in 1969.

Great-grandchildren are RJ and Aaron Card of Oxford, Krystin “Kryckit” Dubois of West Paris and Sadie Miller of Scarborough.

Brothers are Fernald Shaw, who resides in Washington and Francis Jr. and wife, Jane Shaw, of Lewiston. Her sister, Kathleen Chapman, passed away previously.

Nieces who were very special are Madeline and husband, Sam Samolchuk, of Glen, N.H., and Pammy Ann and husband, Bob Cameron, from Higganum, Conn.

Mary had many great-nieces and great-nephews. She also had many great-great-nieces and -nephews. She was also Aunt Mary to many nieces and nephews from the Estes family.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mildred and Francis Shaw, and husband, Robert Estes.
