BETHEL — The Androscoggin River Watershed Council will host a free workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Mahoosuc Land Trust.

After a brief classroom session, the workshop will move outside to a nearby erosion site, where participants can brainstorm simple solutions.

The workshop will explore ways in which the demand for off-road recreational opportunities can be balanced with the need to protect brook trout habitat in the resource-rich area of the Upper Sunday River Watershed, which encompasses both private and public lands. Simple erosion control techniques that can be implemented by all-terrain vehicle, jeep and snowmobile clubs will be discussed.

Use of old logging roads, skidder trails and even newly created trails can have lasting impacts on streams and brook trout. Fishing in the Androscoggin River and many tributaries such as the Sunday and Bear rivers is also a growing economic driver in the region.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Sandwiches, drinks and snacks will be served.
