NORWAY — Edward L. Dilworth III has announced his candidacy for Oxford County judge of probate.

The current judge, Dana Hanley, a Paris attorney, will retire at the end of the year.

Dilworth was born and raised in Maine and has made his home in Oxford County since 1994.

A partner in Dow’s Law Office, a family-owned firm in downtown Norway, Dilworth has practiced as a trial attorney for the past 22 years, according to a campaign statement. He is a past president of the Oxford County Trial Lawyers and former governor of the Maine State Bar Association, where he was elected by the lawyers of Oxford and Franklin counties to serve as their representative.

According to his statement, Dilworth has received support from a number of lawyers in Oxford County, and from former Registers of Probate Tom Winsor and Bruce Rood to campaign for judge of probate.

According to his statement, Dilworth said he has the respect of the legal community and the legal and courtroom experience necessary to continue the outstanding judicial service the Oxford County Probate Court has had during the past 16 years of Hanley’s tenure.

Dilworth said in his statement, “I am running for Judge of Probate because our community needs a judge who has many years of courtroom experience and a strong legal background. A judge has to be ready on day one. This is not a position where you can afford to learn on the job. I am ready to start on day one. I am looking forward to serving as your judge and be given the opportunity to give back to the Oxford County community.”

Dilworth and his wife, Jennifer McPhee Dilworth, who is register of probate for Oxford County, live in Norway with their grade-school daughter.
