Strawberries are coming this week in the regular old-style baskets, rather poor quality, with the price ranging from 22 to 25 cts. They are a good berry, which, however, seems the worse for long travels from the southland. Dandelions feel the near-at-hand competition of the back-garden patch, for the price is off to 35 cts. and spinach has been a veritable bargain in retail quarters. One store has featured a window-full and side-walk line of barrels of the spring dish at 10 cts. per peck, while other store are quoting it from 20 to 25 cts.

50 years ago, 1966
Announcement has been made that the Citizens Committee to Keep Auburn Beautiful will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Auburn City building. The members also are inviting the public to attend. Franklin Prescott, chairman, announced that several reports on the progress of the Washington Street clean-up campaign will be made as well as the projects being worked on by the Boy Scout troops and the band students.

Lewiston and Oxford, Somerset and Androscoggin counties are the newest additions to the U.S. Labor Department list of “labor surplus areas,” Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin announced today. Employers in labor surplus areas, which are characterized as high unemployment, are eligible for preference in obtaining federal procurement contracts. The purpose of identifying these areas is to direct the government’s procurement dollars into areas where people are in the most severe economic need.
