OXFORD — A group of Oxford Hills Middle School students are on a quest to support the community-at-large and their own school.
YARD SALE TIME — Oxford Hills Middle School Quest students Abby Fleming, Robert Young and AaLiyah Moore hang flyers announcing the community wide yard sale and dinner.
Thirty-four students from Michele Wood’s and Erica Rogers’ classes at the South Campus have been planning a huge community yard sale and vendor event plus a community dinner to raise funds for school programs and other needs students have identified.
Wood said the students hope to raise $1,000 with the combined events. The money will help support OHMS Quest programs. Money will also be used to provide students (who rely on school lunches) with nonperishable food for meals at home during February and April vacations. Wood said they also plan to send a financially needy middle school student to summer camp.
“At Oxford Hills Middle School, students are taught how to be active, responsible citizens,” Wood told the Advertiser Democrat. “One of the aspects that we focus on is giving back to the community. At our South Campus location, we are working on a fundraiser for our quest called, #AQuestforCommunityOHMS. This quest is not just about fundraising for our school but also donating to a charity or cause that is important to us.”
On Saturday, June 4, the yard sale event will be held at the middle school North Campus football field, 100 Pine St., in Paris, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces are available for $10 each.

Seventh grade student Abby Fleming said the students all have different roles for the event.
“I chose to be in the Communications Committee because I wanted to be able to interact and communicate with people about the yard sale and vendor event. Mostly making sure the word gets out,” Fleming said.
Fleming said her committee was responsible for hand delivering flyers to local businesses and emailing correspondence with interested parties for the event.
“Other students are on the Broadcast Committee that are working on an audio clip to be broadcast at our local radio station,” she said.
In addition to the yard sale, the group has decided to have a community dinner at Daddy O’s, 1570 Main St., in Oxford on Wednesday, June 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. A donation at the door is being requested for a choice of lasagna or chicken fingers and fries.
Oxford Hills Middle School operates under a trimester schedule with students rotating between the Paris (North) and Oxford (South) campuses.
Quest program offerings are part of the curriculum and allow students to learn in nontraditional ways. The Quest programs offer a wide range of opportunities and include partnerships with local businesses.
