1941 – 2016

PORTLAND — Elizabeth “Beth” A. Bean, 74, of Newry died in Portland on Monday, May 9, after a sudden illness.

She was born in Groveton, N.H., on Aug. 14, 1941, the daughter of Irving and Elizabeth (Arsenault) Covell. She attended local schools and graduated from Groveton High School, Class of 1959, where she was a majorette and member of the choir. Beth married Charles “Charlie” Bean on Aug. 20, 1988, and together they owned and operated Sunday River Gems.

Beth was a member of the West Bethel Union Church, the American Legion Auxiliary of Bethel and was the former president of the South Portland Eagles Club. She enjoyed gems and her time spent in Florida.

Beth is survived by her husband, Charlie of Newry; children, Charlene Hamel of Charlotte, N.C., Chuck Libby of South Portland, Charles “Chuck” Bean Jr. of Gray, Scott Bean of Cumberland, Tammy Rooney of Madison, Conn., and Kimberly Jean Bean of Newry; brother, Thomas Covell of Groveton, N.H.; sister, Jeannie Miller of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, including one special granddaughter, Sarah Rulman of Windham; and many great-grandchildren.
