The Maine Principals’ Association annual singles tennis tournament kicks off this weekend with regional qualifying tournaments across five regions.

The top eight seeds in the Region 4 girls’ qualifying tourney all hail from area schools. They are, in seed order: 1. Bethany Hammond, St. Dom’s; 2. Maddi Roy, Lewiston; 3. Eryn Doiron, Mt. Blue; 4. Alanna Taylor, Lewiston; 5. Megan Chamberland, Winthrop; 6. Madelyn Dwyer, Maranacook; 7. Sophie Swain, Mt. Blue; 8. Oriane Catillaz, Maranacook.

The top eight seeds in the Region 4 boys’ bracket are as follows: 1. Cole Ouellette, Lewiston; 2. Evan Backes, Mt. Blue; 3. Timo Teckenberg, Lewiston; 4. Jack Leopold, Mt. Blue; 5. Franscesco Polvara, Mountain Valley; 6. Alex Bunnell, Mt. Blue; 7. Andy Peterson, Hall-Dale; 8. Noah Toussaint, St. Doms.

In Region 5, the largest and deepest region to the South, 17 boys and 17 girls are seeded, led in each case by a top player from Falmouth High School. Nick Forester leads the men’s bracket, followed by exchange student Darly Vyhodtsev of Thornton Academy, Michael Mills of Cape Elizabeth and Forester’s teammate, Alex Klemperer, of Falmouth.

On the girls’ side, Julia Brogan of Falmouth is a co-No. 1 with Lana Mavor of Yarmouth. Rosemary Camanella of Wells is at No. 3, with Lena Rich of NYA at No. 4.

In the Region 3 girls’ bracket, Waterville’s Emma Cristan gets the top nod, followed by Camden Hills’ Janna Spieker and Katherine Vanorsdall. Arielle Leeman of Morse and Cassie Ridge of Brunswick round out the top five.

Paul Branch of John Bapst and Kelly Martin of Hamden Academy lead the way in the Region 2 brackets, which go 11 seeds deep based on participation numbers.

After Saturday’s qualifying round, the top 40 remaining boys and girls will participate in the annual main draw of the tourney, which runs three days over Memorial Day weekend. The rounds of 40 and 32 will take place on Friday, May 27 at Lewiston High School. The rounds of 16 and eight are Saturday, May 28, also at Lewiston, and the semifinals and final are slated for Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Complex in Lewiston.
