LEWISTON — Lewiston streets should see more work this year: The City Council put more bond money toward road repairs Tuesday night.

Councilors approved a $12.2 million bond package for the 2016-17 fiscal year, set to begin in July 2016, for equipment and capital projects.

That includes spending for road and Public Works projects, city equipment and vehicles, water, sewer and storm-sewer utilities and the School Department.

Councilors said they would reallocate money from the package, taking $850,000 from two projects and putting it toward roads, bringing the total road-repair budget to $2.5 million.

City Administrator Ed Barrett said staff would present a list of suggested roads at a future council meeting.

The bond package calls for:

• $1.1 million in work on Lewiston schools, including $236,526 toward new elementary school construction;

• $389,000 to continue buying Chromebook computers for the high school;

• a $100,000 telephone upgrade at Lewiston High School; and

• $4.6 million in municipal projects.

Councilor Mike Lachance suggested the city put some of that money into Willow Circle, a little cul-de-sac off Bartlett Street that runs behind the Public Works shops.

It’s the worst-rated street in the city, Lachance said, with a score of 2 out of 100.

“I would like to see something done with it,” Lachance said. “It doesn’t need to be completely torn up and redone. Residents would be just as happy with a patch-and-fill resurfacing.”

Public Works Director Dave Jones said it would cost about $40,000 to make a temporary fix and up to $140,000 to make longer-lasting repairs.

Barrett suggested councilors not fund a plan to build a terminal parking lot at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport — a $350,000 line item — and hold off on buying new radios for Lewiston-Auburn 911 for $500,000. Both are budget items shared by each city, but Barrett said Auburn has cut them from its budget.

He suggested councilors reallocate that money to the roads, repairing Willow Circle and other streets.

“We should have $710,000 left after Willow Circle,” Barrett said. “We’ll come back with a set of suggestions as to how to spend it. We’ll take a look at what’s on our list and come back to you.”
