100 years ago, 1916
Joseph Gammage, traveling salesman for a Boston firm, was in Auburn Monday on business. Mr. Gammage is one of the oldest traveling salesmen in the country and has worked for one firm continuously for 58 yours. He was born in London, came to America at the age of 17, and has crossed the Atlantic 71 times.
50 years ago, 1966
(EDITORIAL) The Lewiston Board of Mayor and Aldermen Tuesday night virtually slapped more than 100 citizens in the face by refusing to recognize them during the course of a five-hour session at city hall. The group ignored was made up of parents, teachers and students who obviously were present to voice their concern over the shortage of essential school supplies. The aldermen owed this body of interested citizens the courtesy of bring heard.
We consider it wrong to force a large number of citizens to stand around, spilling out into the corridor where they cannot hear what is taking place, when plenty of seating room is available.
25 years ago, 1991
Nearly 200 shoe workers who lost their jobs when Etonic-Tretorn closed its doors in February have a chance to be back on the job within the next few months. Shaer Shoe Co. of Manchester, N.H., a company that makes shoes for retailers like Thom McAn, is wrapping up the details of financing new machinery and equipment with the Finance Authority of Maine. One component of the FAME application requests that members of the Auburn City Council endorse a resolution supporting Shaer’s efforts to locate here.
