MEXICO — A household hazardous materials collection will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11, at Region 9 School of Applied Technology on River Street.
Patricia Duguay, executive director of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, said examples of household hazardous waste include cleaners, solvents, chemical lawn fertilizers, weed and insect killers, swimming pool chemicals, driveway sealers, rat poison, mothballs and rechargeable batteries.
“Look for the words ‘poison, danger, corrosive, toxic, volatile, flammable, caution or warning’ on the label,” Duguay said.
She added that oil-based and Latex paint will not be accepted. They can be disposed of at the Transfer/Recycling Center on River Road.
Any waste being brought to Region 9 should be “in the original, securely closed containers, if possible,” Duguay said, adding, “if a container is leaking, pack the whole thing into a bucket, and never smoke or eat while handling or transporting hazardous materials.”
For more information, call Duguay at 364-7408.
