MINOT — Selectmen have awarded the contract for summer paving to All State Paving of Windham for $59.24 per ton of asphalt. It was the lowest of five bids.
At the March town meeting, voters allocated $328,000 to pave Verrill, North Verrill and Garfield roads, and the lower section of Center Minot Hill Road.
The town highway crew has begun preparation for the paving and, according to crew supervisor Scott Parker, has completed the ditching on Verrill and North Verrill roads. Parker said they intend to continue with ditching on Garfield Road after all of the cemeteries have been mowed and flags installed on veterans’ graves in preparation for Memorial Day.
Town Administrator Arlan Saunders said he received three quotes for a new zero-turn mower and has gone ahead with the purchase from Reggie’s Small Engine of Auburn.
“Reggie’s came in with the lowest bid, at $8,200, for a 60-inch Exmark,” Saunders said, “and the crew is already mowing with it.”
Saunders also reported Monday night that the water leak at Minot Consolidated School has been found and repaired.
“They found a leaking toilet in the kindergarten room,” Saunders said. Regional School Unit 16 is replacing the flush mechanism in all toilets at the school, he said.
The search for the leak began in earnest just over two weeks ago when the monthly meter reading showed that water consumption at the school had suddenly increased from about 20,000 gallons a month to 84,000 gallons a month.
In other business:
* Fire Chief Dean Campbell told the board the Fire Department was busy this past week with calls to Oxford and Hartford.
* He said the West Minot Fire Co. could no longer afford the cost of putting on Community Day in the latter part of September.
Selectmen directed Saunders to get a list of projected costs from the Fire Department and see what other funding sources might be available.
* Saunders reported that, following a cemetery committee meeting, he was asked to obtain designs for a 20- by 40-foot memorial garden at the Center Minot Hill cemetery.
* Selectmen changed the due date for bids on tax-acquired property at Shaw Hill Road and Hillside Avenue from June 13 to June 17 at 1 p.m. The minimum bid is $9,500. Selectmen will take action at their June 20 meeting.
