LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine is offering two water-based American Red Cross safety courses.

A Water Safety Instructor course will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 6, 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This course will train students on how to teach the American Red Cross swim instruction courses and basic water rescue. Participants must be at least 16 years old and show a Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate.

The cost is $350 for YWCA members and $400 for nonmembers. Registration is required by May 30.

A lifeguard training course will be on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, June 12, 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

This course teaches students the knowledge and skills essential to prevent and respond appropriately to aquatic emergencies. This course includes American Red Cross CPR/AED for professional rescuers and standard first aid.

Participants must be at least 15 years old and complete a prerequisite test composed of a 30o-yard swim, timed deep water object removal and treading water for two minutes without using hands.

The test will take place on the first day of class. All registrants are encouraged to visit the YWCA for free during Open Swim to prepare for the prerequisite test.

Cost is $275 for YWCA members and $300 for nonmembers. Registration is required by June 8.
