1947 – 2016

FRYEBURG — Dan Joseph Managan, 68, of Bridgton ran out of time while battling cancer Saturday, May 28.

Born on Aug. 3, 1947, to William Dan (Jiggs) and Catherine Elizabeth (Kit) (Reynolds) Managan, Dan grew up and spent his childhood in Bellows Falls, Vt.

Dan graduated from St. Charles School and Bellow Falls High School in 1965. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Drum & Bugle Corps. After graduating from high school, Dan attended Bentley College for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. After spending three years in the Army, with a year in Vietnam, Dan went to work for First National Stores. He was a dedicated employee for 17 years and was often transferred around.

Eventually, Dan found himself in Maine, where he began his career in police dispatching for the town of Bridgton. He loved the community and his career as a dispatcher as much as the Police Department and citizens loved him. He always swung by the Big Apple before and sometimes after shifts for a coffee and to say hello to whomever was working.

While working at the Police Department, Dan met and married the love of his life, Susan L. (Stevens) Managan on Sept. 15, 2001. After 25 years, Dan retired from the Bridgton Police Department.

Retirement didn’t mean that Dan was slowing down. Instead, he found himself attending more soccer and basketball games and going to Scout outings with grandsons Riley and Tyler Neal, whom he and Sue were raising.

Dan was never one to ask for anything, but his kindness, generosity and commitment to community showed in his final days when nurses, former police department co-workers and other friends would visit him by his bedside. He called each and every one of them by name and was grateful for their visits. Dan will be missed by his loving family and adoring community.

Surviving are his brother, James Managan and life partner, Carol Hanson, of Springfield,Vt.; sister, Teri Bard and Bob of West Oneonta, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Kathy Ferland and husband, Andrew, of Melvin Village, N.H.; stepsons, Richard Thompson and soul mate, Jamie Arcand, of Naples and David Neal Jr. and wife, Megan, of Bridgton.

Dan is also survived by five nieces and nephews; as well as grandchildren, Molly, Jacob, Lillian and Gabrielle Ferland, Breanna and Ricky Thompson, LeeAnne O’Brien, and Riley, Tyler, Connor and Tiana Neal.

He was predeceased by his wife, Susan L. Managan, on May 6, 2015.

Dan’s family would like to thank the Bridgton Police Department, the nurses of Bridgton Hospital and Fryeburg Health Care for their wonderful and loving care in the last few months of his life.
