NORWAY — “Our Town,” one of America’s theatrical masterpieces, comes to the Norway Grange stage for seven performances by the Oxford Hills Music and Performing Arts Association beginning Thursday, June 16.

It tells the story of the fictional New England small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its residents.

In three acts titled “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Dying,” the play is performed without a set on a mostly-bare stage. With a few exceptions, the actors mime actions without the use of props.

For example, the scene in which Emily helps George with his evening homework, conversing through upstairs windows, is performed with the two actors standing atop stepladders to represent their neighboring houses.

“I have a wonderful cast to work with for this play,” said Tom Littlefield, OHMPAA veteran and director. The performers are a true cross-section of the community, he said. Some are well-known for past performances and others are appearing on stage for the first time.

“This is real community theater,” Littlefield said. “Everybody is helping everybody else.”

Mark Hazard, a veteran performer in shows throughout the region, plays the multi-faceted role of the stage manager. He’s a narrator, a commentator, and a guide through Grover’s Corners.

The stage manager joins in the action of the play periodically as the minister at the wedding, the soda shop owner, and local townsmen.

“Our Town” follows the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually — in one of the most famous scenes in American theater — die. Littlefield said the values embodied in this show reflect the whole range of the human experience.

The members of the Gibbs family are played by Andrew Scott Turner (Dr. Gibbs), and Corrine Turner (Mrs. Gibbs). Lucas Allen portrays George Gibbs and Gabrielle Turner is Rebecca, his younger sister.

Ebony Wells has a principal role as Emily Webb, who is courted by George. Her parents are played by Paula Easton and Chris Easton. They are repeating the roles they played in an OHMPAA production several years ago.

Joel Pulkkinen, an OHMPAA regular, has dual roles as the milkman Howie Newsome and as Joe Stoddard, the undertaker.

Sally Jones, a veteran actor and playwright, plays Mrs. Soames. Littlefield said it’s a small but memorable role as a gossipy choir member.

Littlefield plays Simon Stimson, the embittered choir director and church organist.

Newcomers to the stage are Liam Bell as paperboy Joe Crowell, and Eric Bell as Constable Warren and as Sam Craig, a nephew of Mrs. Gibbs, who returns to Grover’s Corners for a funeral.

Others in the cast are Griffin Turner as Wally Webb; Kristen Short as Professor Willard; and Maria Commoss as Sylvie Crowell. Townspeople are played by Justice Pittman, Claire Cummings and Allison Short.

Producers of “Our Town” are Connie Allen, Mallory Martin and Brandi Sawyer.

From 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, an exhibition titled Our Town — Norway will be held at the Norway Historical Society across from the Grange Hall.
