SANDY RIVER PLANTATION — A fire that destroyed a 32-foot camper Wednesday was most likely caused by an electrical malfunction behind a refrigerator, Rangeley Fire Chief Tim Pellerin said Thursday.

The camper was parked on the property of its owner, William Keirstead, at 6 Dad’s Way, off Route 4. No one was staying in it. Keirstead used a garden hose to keep the fire in check until firefighters arrived.

There was fire coming from the bedroom and kitchen area, Pellerin said. Sixteen firefighters responded and were able to knock the fire down quickly.

Firefighters were able to save some of the belongings in the camper, which was not insured.

Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control. NorthStar EMS ambulance stood by at the scene.

No one was injured, Pellerin said.
