LISBON — Lisbon High School held a charter event in May to welcome its first Key Club.
The induction ceremony was sponsored by the Lewiston-Auburn Kiwanis Club, and local club members attended. Also in attendance were several members of the Scarborough, Portland and Norway-Paris Kiwanis clubs.
Key Club International is the high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Key Clubs help carry out the mission of Kiwanis, which is to serve the children of the world, one at a time, starting in their own neighborhoods.
To do this, clubs perform community service projects such as cleaning up parks, collecting shoes and clothing or organizing food drives. Students learn leadership skills by leading meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.
Under the guidance of faculty adviser Michelle Huston, the Key Club had a busy first year. Members participated in the Good Shepherd Food Bank School Spirit Challenge, Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays, babysitting, a blood drive and helped out at the Winter Carnival.
Future projects will include the Dempsey Challenge, the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Drive and helping the homeless, according to Huston.
“We have the best of the best of Lisbon High School in this club of over 25 members. We care about our school and community. These students juggle academics and sports, and still have time to devote to this amazing club,” she said.
Key Club members also help the Lewiston-Auburn Kiwanis Club with larger tasks or join in fundraising events.
