1932 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — David W. Capen Jr., 84, died Thursday, June 23, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 12, 1932, in Livermore to David W. Sr. and Florence Capen. He was educated in Livermore schools. On Feb. 2, 1952, he married the former Beverly McDaniel in Livermore and they remained a loving couple for 64 years until his death. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War, where he fought with courage and bravery and earned a Bronze Star.
Upon his return from Korea, he and Beverly settled in the Oxford Hills area and he provided for his growing family by working as an auto mechanic. He and Beverly were the proud parents of seven children. In 1966, they returned to Livermore and he remained there until moving to MVH in March 2016.
A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis caused an early retirement and he settled into a quiet life with Beverly. He was known to be able to fix anything. If your car wasn’t running, bring it to Dave and he would have it back on the road. He enjoyed car rides and trips for as long as he was able to and going out to eat was one of his favorite activities.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beverly; and their seven children, Lucille Capen-Bear and her husband, Eric, of Wilton, Roberta Hodgdon and her husband, Charles, of Windham, Katherine Roberts and husband, Bryan, of Greenland, N.H., Daniel Capen and wife, Mary, of Clarksville, Tenn., Leonard Capen and wife, Nicola, of Sumner, Regina Ebner and husband, Patrick, of Lisbon Falls, and Marvin Capen and his companion, Teresa Pottle, of Bristol; nine grandchildren, Danny Pierce, Eric Hodgdon, April Hodgdon, Deena Poston, Freedom Capen, Zane Capen, Oren Capen, Garth Ebner and Eli Capen; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Moore of Livermore; and two nephews and a niece.
He was predeceased by his parents, David and Florence; two grandsons, Shannon Pierce and Brian Capen; and a niece and nephew.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris. Their care and attention to David in his final months will never be forgotten.
