1918 – 2016
South PARIS — Lloyd D. Herrick, 98, of 29 Everett Drive, Norway, died Monday, June 20 at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
He was born in Oxford on Jan. 24, 1918, the son of Adna Herrick and Maude Poland Herrick. He was educated in Oxford schools and he maintained for years a paper route (on foot) as well as janitor for the Welchville School, starting the morning fires and carrying water for the day.
On April 1, 1939, he married Gloria N. Smith of Oxford. He worked in the Robinson Woolen Mill, on the railroad and then at the South Portland Shipyard, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945. He was sent to the Philippine Islands and Nagoya to destroy weapons and help clean up after the war.
Later upon returning home, he worked as a carpenter for Phil White Contractor before being hired at Wilner Wood Products, where he worked for 40 years. He did many jobs there including welding and maintenance on the wood flour silos, built and repaired slides for the saw mill.
In later years, after their family of four children were grown, he and Gloria took many wonderful trips including two to Hawaii. He was passionate about fishing and enjoyed hunting. Probably one of his most memorable trips he made with Skip was to Alaska to catch some great salmon.
A member of the American Legion and VFW, he was thrilled to go with his good friend, Robert “Bob” Sessions to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., Lloyd was a member of the Oxford Lodge No. 18 and the Valley of Auburn and Portland Scottish Rites as a 32nd degree Mason.
Since 2004, he had lived with his daughter, Rose and granddaughter, Alana. Unable to travel any distances, he has looked forward to going to the Oxford Casino a day now and then, play the slots, and was pleased to meet so many of the employees who have treated him with care and respect.
A hardworking, wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by three daughters, Gloria Whittier (Glenn) of Auburn, Rose DePerte (the late Tony DePerte of Norway), Elizabeth “Betty” King (Jeff) of Lewiston; and son, Lloyd “Skip” Herrick (Deborah) of Paris; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Adna and Maude Herrick; brothers, Arthur Herrick, George Herrick, Chester Herrick and Ormond Herrick; wife, Gloria in 2004; and wonderful friend, Harold Whittier of Auburn; and adopted sister, Anne Thayer.
Lloyd’s family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the staff of Maine Veterans’ Home for the excellent care.
