FARMINGTON — The Healthy Community Coalition will sponsor free summer activities for school-aged youth in Franklin County through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant.

Programs are available to students in Regional School Unit 9, School Administrative District 58 and Stratton schools. Several area partners have been engaged to offer a variety of physical activity opportunities throughout Franklin County.

The Carrabassett Valley Recreation Department will offer two mountain bike camps for kids entering grades six to 12 at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center:

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 18 to 22; and

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 25 to 29.

Participants of the mountain bike camps will learn about tuning a bike, braking, balance, uphill single-track riding, safety, nature, fitness, pedal smarts and healthy eating for energy.

Equipment is available for use, and those registering must indicate if the child will need equipment or if they are bringing his or her own.

Other area summer programs being offered include:

• The Strong School will host a summer program for kids entering grades one through five that will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, July 12 to 28. Field trips to area attractions on Thursday are being planned. Children attending this program will receive a complimentary breakfast and lunch through the Summer Meals Program.

• Mt. Abram High School will offer an adventure program for high school students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, July 11 to 27. Students will be taking a three-day trip to Jackman the last week of the program. Registration information was distributed before the school’s summer break. This is a partnership with the GEAR UP program. To register, call 207-347-9515.

• The Kingfield Recreation Department will offer summer programs Tuesday to Thursday, July 5, 6, 7 and Aug. 23 to 25. For more information, contact the Recreation Department at 207-265-4637.
