FARMINGTON — Youths ages 12 to 18 are invited to join the 4-H Blacksmith Special Interest Club.
This free six-session workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 22 at the Farmington Fairgrounds.
The 4-H Blacksmith SPIN Club is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H in partnership with the Western Maine Blacksmith Association.
Participants will learn about blacksmithing history and tools, forge safety, fire-lighting and basic blacksmithing skills, including drawing out, tapering and bending steel. Hands-on lessons will also include twisting, punching and scroll work, as well as forging nails and spoons.
This opportunity is available to both current 4-H members and youths interested in joining 4-H for the first time. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Youths must commit to attending all six sessions.
