Among the best-looking crops seen this year are those of William Elwell of the South River Road, Auburn. Three fine-looking pieces of sweet corn and a lot of peas have got a good start for the season and bid fair to mature early. For years, Mr. Elwell has made a specialty of growing early sweet corn for the local markets, being one of the first ones in this section to bring in that product.
50 years ago, 1966
An appeal for a permit to operate a ski tow and construct a small building was tabled Thursday night by the Lewiston Zoning Board of Appeals for presentation of more detailed plans. Roland P. Bolduc of 1967 Lisbon St., Lewiston, sought the variance for the ski area, which would be located at 1967 Lisbon Street. This is a short distance south of the Holiday Motel on the same side of the road, but it would be a considerable distance back from the road. Several neighbors spoke in favor of the project, commenting that it would be good for the youngsters of the area and would not interfere with anyone’s property.

Christopher M. Beam, director of the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on the Records of Congress. He was named to the position by U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell, the Senate majority leader. The Advisory Committee consists
of 11 members, including the secretary of the Senate, the archivist of the United States, the House and Senate historians, and appointees of the majority and minority leaders of the Senate and House.
