For generations, people of Auburn have been creating a community that we are proud of, standing up for those with no voices of their own, as well as relentlessly protecting our way of life — things nestled deep within the roots of our community. Residents will no longer have control over those things if we don’t vote to stop the merger of the two cities in its tracks.

People who don’t want the Charter Commission making the decisions about the future of the community, with no regard for Auburn’s independence, must vote “no” on the merger. The Charter Commission’s work should be finished once the votes have been counted.

I strongly urge my friends and family, teachers, members of the police force, firemen and postal workers, to the woman who makes the perfect Italian sandwiches at Roy’s Foodland (one of the many fantastic small businesses that will be subjected to the Charter Commission’s rule as the commission tries to further monopolize everything by outlining their plans once a merger takes place), all the way to the faces I haven’t yet met — I plead to everyone — the merger is not just another Facebook news story. This is our future and I am just like everyone else — trying to survive by maintaining what we have worked so hard to become.

I urge Auburn residents to please join me in voting to prevent the merger of Auburn and Lewiston.

Isaiah Walker, Auburn
