AUBURN — Councilors on Monday set a Sept. 9 departure date for City Manager Howard Kroll, but will wait until next week to figure out what they’ll do once he leaves.
“Howard has agreed to stay on for two months and help manage projects that are active,” Mayor Jonathan LaBonte said after Monday’s City Council meeting. “There are a lot of things going on, with new positions being created. Projects are coming together, so having the extra capacity with him still on during that time will be great.”
Kroll resigned from his job as manager July 1 but said he would stay on the job as long as the city needed him.
Councilors met in an executive session at the end of Monday’s meeting, voting to accept Kroll’s resignation when they emerged.
LaBonte said he and councilors have talked about replacing Kroll in the broadest terms and didn’t have the chance to discuss details before Monday’s meeting. There will be time set aside for discussion at the July 18 meeting, he said.
“We need to move one step at a time,” LaBonte said.
Councilors tapped Kroll to replace outgoing City Manager Clinton Deschene temporarily in November 2014, making Kroll the permanent city manager in August 2015. Kroll had served as assistant city manager up to that point.
Councilors selected his predecessor, Deschene, in May 2012 after a seven-month national search. Deschene had been the town manager of Hermon.
