KENNEBUNK — State police in Maine say a woman was struck by at least three cars and killed while walking across six lanes of traffic on the Maine Turnpike near service plazas in Kennebunk.

Police say Kelly Genito of Cairo, N.Y., was struck and died instantly in the northbound side. The crash occurred a little after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office will do an autopsy.

Witnesses told police they saw the woman on her cellphone as she attempted to cross the highway.

The woman had been with her husband, Marco Genito, 38, who was sleeping in the cab of his tractor trailer when the fatal crash occurred. Troopers said they found her husband when they started to talk to motorists in the parking lot.  He was not aware of the crash, according to police.

The couple had delivered items to Lewiston and Medway on Wednesday and stopped about 6 p.m. at the southbound plaza.

Marco Genito received a summons on a charge of violating a protection order, that has been filed against him by his wife, according to state police.  The charge was filed after consultation with the York County District Attorney’s Office. The couple have three children, and Genito returned to his home Thursday morning after talking to troopers.
