FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners approved a request by an ATV club to travel nine-10ths of a mile on Reed Road in Salem Township, contingent upon review by an agent from the Maine County Commissioners Association Risk Pool.

The access would be from Route 142 to Rowe Camp and West Farmington Trail.

John Shaw, president of the Mt. Abram Trail Riders ATV Club, made the request to commissioners Tuesday to use the access route and to put up signs to access the ATV trail.

Shaw said the road is being used. The club has been working with Brian Bronson, who is a state ATV program coordinator, and he strongly suggested club members go to county commissioners to discuss access over the county road, Shaw said.

A copy of the Maine Tort Claims Act, which limits a government entity’s liability, was provided to commissioners.

Clerk Julie Magoon said she sent the request to the county’s road agent, Jerry Haines. He had no objections as long as they put up signs and the speed limit is set at 25 miles per hour, she said.
