On July 9, Barney LaRoche, a legend in Berlin, N.H., hockey circles, celebrated his 100th birthday. Known as the “Rocket,” he began skating at just 5 years of age. Outside rinks were plenty in those days. One had to love the game to play against the outside elements.
LaRoche’s list of awards in the sport of hockey are second to none, providing coaching and sponsorship to numerous youth recreational teams through the years and also sponsorship in the men’s senior leagues. He touched and impacted so many lives and truly made them that much better.
My wife and I were honored to be present to witness LaRoche’s recent birthday. His friends, family and the community came together to celebrate a man who devoted his life to hockey and to his community. He led many championship hockey teams, both as an outstanding player and as a coach.
We will always remember Barney LaRoche as a friend and as a coach of the Berlin Maroons’ hockey team.
