Eugene Geiger, chairman of the Lewiston-Auburn Joint Charter Commission, recently said in the Sun Journal that he was going to invite the public to select the name of the new merged city. He was quoted as saying, “We’re just letting people type in what they want and then, whether we’ve gotten five or 500 suggestions, we’ll figure out what the top ones are.”

In other words, Geiger is saying that residents should throw out the two centuries of history in Lewiston and Auburn and vote for a city named by as few as five people.

I have seen some crazy ideas before, but that one takes the cake.

Geiger and the small group from the Chamber of Commerce who want to take the two historic cities away from the residents should be ashamed of themselves.

I do not support a merger of Lewiston and Auburn. I wish that crazy idea would go away.
