Social Media for Beginners

FARMINGTON — TechnOldie Support, a brain child of University of Maine at Farmington students to aid older adults with navigating the modern electronic world, will hold its first community session from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at the Farmington Public Library.

Topic is Social Media for Beginners. Participants will learn common ways of connecting through email, Skype, Twitter and other social networks. If convenient, devices may be brought for personal help after the presentation.

TechnOldie Support will hold four free sessions on monthly Saturday afternoons during the summer.

Investigative journalism at Cary Library

WAYNE — Cary Memorial Library will host Meet the Muckrakers at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at 17 Old Winthrop Road.

Co-founders of the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting John Christie and Naomi Schalit will discuss the critical connection between journalism and democracy and provide an inside look into how investigative journalism is done.

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative journalism organization founded in 2009 to research, write and publish stories about Maine government. Christie and Schalit created it as a response to the threat to democracy posed by diminished local reporting.

The talk will last about 20 to 30 minutes, and there will be a question-and-answer session. Refreshments will be served.

SeniorsPlus presents City at Sea

WEST PARIS — SeniorsPlus has announced the July offering of the Long Distance Learning program, connecting community members in the West Paris area with live educational seminars at the Lewiston Education Center of SeniorsPlus.

The class, City at Sea, will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at West Paris Public Library.

Instructor Alan Elze will discuss his experience spending six months on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the Pacific, 4½ acres of American Freedom, a small city at sea.

Community members who wish to join the classroom at the West Paris Library need to register with SeniorsPlus. The class is free and all are welcome.

Revised bylaws at Heritage Trust

RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust’s annual meeting will be at 4 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Rangeley Regional Guides and Sportsman’s Clubhouse.

Over the past year, the board of directors has worked on revisions to the bylaws. The board approved these on April 6. The next step in the process is for members to vote on these at the meeting. Members are asked to review the revised bylaws before attending.
