JAY — Selectpersons will hold a public hearing tonight on requests to have speed limits implemented on three roadways.
The hearing begins at 6 p.m. at the Town Office.
At least 50 percent of residents and businesses on Barker Street, Ludden Drive and School Bus Road signed a petition requesting selectpersons to hold a hearing on speed limit proposals. Petitioners are requesting speed limits of 15 to 25 mph to be implemented on each road.
There are currently no speed limits posted on those road ways, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
The board in June adopted a new policy on requests for speed-limit changes that requires half or more of the residents and businesses on the road to sign a petition to request the Board of Selectpersons to hold a public hearing.
Following the hearing selectpersons will decide if they will submit the requests to the Maine Department of Transportation. The MDOT in conjunction with the state police have the authority to set speed limits.
