A gift of over 11 acres of land was made to the City of Lewiston today by the Franklin Company, the first step along the path of a proposed amphitheater for the community. The announcement came today from the Lewiston office of Economic Development and its director, Louis C. Sarelas. It was voted to make the land available yesterday at a special stockholders meeting of the Franklin Company at the company offices on Lisbon St. The vote called for making the land available to the citizens of the community “as a gift and to be used for cultural, educational, or recreational purposes.” The land is adjacent to the present Marcotte Park, which is located near the Central Maine Youth Center on Birch St. It is located in a section called “Franklin Pasture,” a well known area to veteran Lewiston residents who engaged in skimming down its slopes on sleds during the winters of their youth.

It’s the case of the mysterious quarters. At 11:53 p.m. Monday someone called the Lewiston police saying “we should look outside our door,” said Lt. Ronald Lessard. Officer Michael McGonagle found a double-bagged shopping bag containing “a couple hundred dollars in quarters” right outside the station, the lieutenant said. The money “has been secured in evidence,” Lessard said, “until such time as we can identify the owner.” He figures the money will eventually be turned over to the city if no one successfully claims it.
