The Lewiston High School attacker scored 47 goals and 24 assists this past season and has been named the 2016 Sun Journal’s Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.
Rivet points to his teammates to the success he attained during the 2016 season.
“It was a great season, not just for me in general, but we had a lot of young talent come up and a lot of leadership by the seniors,” Alex Rivet said. “It was a great season overall, even if it didn’t end the way how we wanted it.”
Rivet built chemistry with fellow attack men Jayden Wilson, Jacob McBride and Gunnar Wade.
Rivet said he’s been playing with Wade and Wilson since the seventh grade. He said Wade is small and used his shiftiness to get around defenders, while Wilson is shifty, but also a power forward.
Rivet considers himself a true power forward who likes to go through the defenders en route to scoring goals.
He felt more comfortable in his sophomore year than his freshmen year. He was able to play more freely and wasn’t worried about making mistakes.
“As a sophomore, you have more freedom, you know what the season is going to be like,” Rivet said. “You are getting bigger and stronger, you are working on offseason training.”
He also learned how to be a leader this season, ahead of his junior year.
“We had a lot of sophomores, it evolves us to be the leaders next year,” Rivet said. “The seniors like Griffin Wade, Brandon Croteau and Mo Khalid that graduated, all those guys are leaving. Leadership-wise they pushed us in practice every day to get us ready to work.”
Rivet has already been preparing for next season, working on his speed and shooting on his off-hand as he knows defenders will force him to his weak side in the years to come.
After a disappointing 9-8 double-overtime quarterfinal loss to the Windham Eagles in the Class A North playoffs, Rivet hopes for a deeper playoff run in 2017.
“If we can play in the offseason together, all those good teams like Brunswick and Scarborough, they play all year long together,” Rivet said. “If we can do that, we have the skill, for every sport we do, we find a way to win.”
He hopes the state title wins for the boys’ soccer and hockey teams in the 2015-16 school calendar year rub off on the lacrosse team in 2017.
