AUBURN — Carol Ann York Fortier, 78, of Auburn passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 5, with her family by her side.
Daughter of Harold J. and Josephine W. (Holb) York, born in White Plains, N.Y., Carol attended schools in Waterville, graduating from Waterville High School in 1956 where she was active in cheerleading, debate team and drama. She attended Colby College where she was voted Homecoming Queen and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a major in English literature in 1960. She received her master’s degree in education from Whittier College in California, after which she briefly taught in Pico Rivera before returning to Waterville.
She moved to Auburn in the late ’60s, where she was a third-grade teacher at Sherwood Heights Elementary School until her retirement in 1998. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends near and far, gardening, taking her daily walk, and the beauty of Maine and its four seasons.
She is survived by a family who will miss her dearly including brother, Tom York and wife, June; sister, Connie Huard and husband, Randy; daughter, Tina; son, Tom; five grandchildren, Julie, Ben, Allison, Chris, and Louis; nephews, Mike and Mark; nieces, Tiffany and Julie; and great-nephews, Mackie, Samuel, James, Martin and Francis.
Over the course of her life, Carol was blessed with great friends and neighbors including so many from Waterville High School and the Class of ’56, Auntie Ray, Marie, Renate and Wallace, Carmen and family, Josie, Deneen and John, Fay, Tracy, and Nancy and Roger.
