Members of the U.S. House and Senate should be thinking about senior citizens who are living on fixed incomes.

According to an answer to a question in Sun Spots (July 19), senior citizens are going to receive a 0.2 percent cost of living adjustment on their Social Security checks beginning in 2017. That amounts to $2 a month on a check for $1,000. Big deal, seeing that members of the House and Senate receive a 3 percent raise every year.

The excuse for not giving a raise in Social Security monthly benefits last year and a very small raise this year was that the prices of gas and oil are down. But taxes and the costs of food and utilities keep going up.

Members of Congress say they want to help senior citizens. They should give us a decent raise.
